The Christian New Year: “Prepared to See”
By: (All)
Scripture:  Mark 13:32-37, Romans 13:11-14
Guest Preacher:  Dr. Mike Pearson

Advent begins by looking, not at Jesus' first arrival, but at his final arrival.  The purpose of this is not to create anxiety in us, but to fill us with hope and to spur us toward following Jesus in all things.  Something happens in our hearts when we live watchfully, with Jesus' final arrival in mind:  our hearts are pulled toward Jesus and away from the things that compete with Jesus for our hearts.

The Christian New Year: “Beholding and Becoming”
    Scripture:  2 Corinthians 3:17-18

On the first Sunday of Advent, which is the beginning of the Christian year, we look at the power of living by the Christian calendar.  Our calendars measure what is important, and the Christian calendar gives us the opportunity to experience and behold Jesus' life and ministry and, according to 2 Corinthians, we become like what we behold.
