At the Foot of the Cross: “Perfect Love Casts Out Fear”
Scripture:  1 John 4:17-18

Fear is based on a failure to believe the gospel.  Is God in control or not?  Is Jesus risen and now sitting on the throne or not?  Has he saved us from our sins?  Christians have no reason to fear what other people think of us, no reason to fear losing our jobs, or even losing our lives, because we're secure in the gospel.

At the Foot of the Cross: “Holding God’s Lamp to my Chest”
    Scripture:  Psalm 42

How do we live by the gospel when we are overtaken by this darkness that is bigger than ourselves?  The best thing for us to do during the storms of life is to look at the God who is in control of it all.

At the Foot of the Cross: “Sailing Rather than Rowing”
    Scripture:  Galatians 5:16-25

So if we're saved by grace and not by what we do, why is there so much emphasis on how we live?  That's because living a Christian life is more like sailing a boat than rowing a boat.  We have work to do, but it is the wind (God) that propels the boat forward.

    Scripture:  Galatians 5:1-4

Human beings have this impulse to make religious rules to live by.  Living in the light of the gospel means that we're set free from them all.

At the Foot of the Cross: “Being Broken to be Whole”
    Scripture:  2 Corinthians 4:7-10

God awakens us to the good news of Jesus by allowing us to see the emptiness of all the other things we pursue and trust in.  If we never recognize how empty we are without God, we will never see the need for the gospel, so can never be awakened to it.

At the Foot of the Cross: “Awake in the Gospel”
    Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

The Gospel is simply the news that Jesus died, was buried, and then resurrected.  How does it change our lives when our appreciation for that grows to a point where we treasure Jesus more than anything else?
